There are two methods to open this knife. Pull down a lever on the spine or push the blade “up and out” with your thumb.
The thumb method is very difficult. It requires a lot of force and feels very unnatural. The safety lock exacerbates the problem because it is positioned in such a manner that when you push the blade you engage the safety, preventing the knife from opening. So as you try to open it you keep wondering if you’re just not pushing hard enough, or if you’ve turned the safety lock on again accidentally.
The thumb switch is so difficult and poorly designed that it is effectively non-functional.
The finger switch on the spine is a little stiff and awkward, but not nearly as bad as the thumb knob.
My brother bought a Kershaw Ken Onion Black Leek Folding Knife with Speed Safe. The action on that is smooth as silk. When it came time to buy a gift for our father, we went with another Kershaw.
